No Fear of Heights Here

Up close look at roof's canopyWhat is 2.5 acres, home to 1.7 million native plants, a habitat for a wide variety of wildlife, provides excellent insulation, absorbs 98% of all storm water and keeps up to two million gallons of year out of a city’s drain? Check out the living roof on San Francisco’s California Academy of Sciences building. Architect Renzo Piano likes to call the undulating green roof¬† a “flying carpet.”

Indeed, that was the sensation I felt when I walked around the roof pavilion earlier this summer.¬† And best of all, I didn’t have to haul out an extension ladder. Those creative folks think of everything these days.
